Fatima, Santiago De Compostella, Portugal & Spain

A journey through the many places of pilgrimage in Portugal and Spain is partaking in an ancient rite of pilgrimage that is both historic and contemporary.

Fatima, Portugal place of the apparitions, of the Virgin Mary to three young shepherd children in the early 20th century, includes the Basilica and Shrine of Our Lady of Fatima, while other regional pilgrimage sites related to the apparition include Loca do Cabeco, Adjustrel, Coimbra and Os Valinhos.

Lisbon, the capital city of Portugal, attracts both tourists and pilgrims for its historic city center including Rossio Square, the Praca do Comercio, Alfama Quarter, Tower of Belem, and seaside port, and is host to a number of important Catholic places of pilgrimage and devotion, including St. Jerome Monastery, Tower of Belem, Christ of Lisbon, Alfama Quarters, Lisbon Cathedral, and Saint Anthony’s birthplace.

In Spain, the Santiago De Compostella, the destination of the most famous pilgrimage trail in Europe, the Camino de Santiago, is home to the venerated relics of Saint James the Apostle.  Other regional places of interest include Cabo Finisterre, Carnota and Muros, the Church of Finisterre and the Sanctuary of the Virgin de La Barca.

The medieval Spanish walled city of Avila, “The Town of Saints,” with its many stone cathedrals, churches and convents, is a journey back to another time.

Barcelona’s architectural wonders include the many buildings of the innovative Guadi, including the famed La Sagrada Familia Cathedral, still undergoing construction after more than a century, the Gothic Quarter.

Visits to Fatima, the Santiago Compostella and other destinations in Spain and Italy can be easily joined with pilgrimages to Lourdes in France, and often visits to the mountainside Benedictine monastery of Montserrat in northern Spain.
